What are They?

The Uniform Resource Locators (URL for short) as a “web address.” When it is entered into the browser bar field, tells the browser to move to a given site and page.

URL rewriting (also known as URL manipulation) is the process of modifying URLs. Changing the URL can help with user access and site visibility.

Why/when it is appropriate to use

URL rewriting can be done using various coding tools, or with a “rewrite engine” that automates the process. Expert web coders may want to rewrite a URL for readability, to make it easier for users to type into the URL bar, or for advertising or visibility benefits.

Security considerations

In hacking, URL rewriting can automatically redirect user traffic, or spoof legitimate sites. The results of this can be frustrating as users find themselves passed around to pages or sites that they do not want to go to.
